The Language Resources Workshop was held at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington, 35 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon on August 16, 1997, the day before the Interactive Systems Grantees Workshop was held in the same location.

This workshop brought together members of the human language technology and interactive systems research community and representatives of federal agencies that sponsor research in these areas. Click here to see a list of attendees .

Ron Cole and Mark Liberman put together two background documents for the workshop:

  1. a statement of motivation and goals for the workshop
  2. a language resources primer .

The workshop was divided into two parts:

  • In the morning attendees reviewed language resource needs, summarized current language resource efforts and models, and examined two models (LDC and CSLU) in detail.
  • In the afternoon, there were two sets of breakout groups: the first set considered what language resources are needed to advance human language technology, while the second set considered models for funding, developing, and distributing these resources.

Since the workshop, a subset of the attendees have been collaborating to produce a report that incorporates the findings and recommendations of the group.
